Chia seeds are my favorite seed for two reasons. One, they have so many health benefits and secondly, because I love the way they plump up when added to a liquid. Here are five interesting facts about these trendy seeds.
1) They are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which are important for brain and heart health. Chia seeds help raise HDL levels (the good cholesterol) and are associated with a lower risk of heart disease.
2) They contain important bone health nutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. For example, eating an ounce of chia seeds each day provides 18 percent of the RDA of calcium.
3) Chia seeds are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids have to be ingested through food as your body cannot produce them. They are a great source of protein especially for vegetarians and vegans.
4) They are a good source of fiber. Almost all of the carbohydrates in chia seeds are soluble fiber. One ounce of chia seeds provides about 10 grams of fiber (1/3 of the RDA for individuals 50 years or older). Fiber is important for gut health.
5) Chia seeds don’t have much flavor so they are easy to incorporate into dishes while reaping their nutrient-rich benefits. My new favorite way to include them in my diet is mixed berry chia seed jam.
